​New Hampshire Antique Co-op presents Surf & Turf: Coastal and Pastoral Landscapes from the 19th Century to Today, an exhibition and sale of paintings celebrating two longstanding themes in American art: the beauty of the coastline and the charm of the countryside. The exhibition is on view now through September 2026 in the galleries at New Hampshire Antique Co-op.

A gallery reception will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 1–3 p.m. in the Upstairs Gallery at New Hampshire Antique Co-op. All are welcome to enjoy champagne, shrimp cocktail, savory hors d’oeuvres, and an afternoon of art, antiques and camaraderie. Held the day before Father’s Day, the reception is a wonderful way to celebrate the start of summer while viewing the exhibition.

This show brings together paintings spanning more than a century of American landscape and seascape art, from the marine paintings of the 19th century through contemporary plein air works inspired by many of the same locations today. Included are works depicting the rugged New England coastline, working harbors, rolling farmland, woodlands, rivers and scenic views from across the country.

Among the 19th and early 20th century artists represented are James E. Buttersworth, Antonio Jacobsen, Edward Moran, Charles Henry Gifford, Granville Perkins, Dwight William Tryon, Thomas Birch, James Hope, William Preston Phelps, Charles Adam Platt, Aldro T. Hibbard, Harriett Lumis, William Lester Stevens, Bruce Crane, Anthony Thieme, Emile Gruppe, Harry Aiken Vincent, Charles Herbert Woodbury and Frederick Mulhaupt.

The exhibition also features works by contemporary artists continuing these traditions, including Erik Koeppel, William R. Davis, TM Nicholas, Joseph McGurl, Erick Ingraham and Stephen Motyka. Many of these painters work en plein air, painting directly from nature and drawing inspiration from the same coastal and rural landscapes that captivated artists of earlier generations.

American landscape painting has long reflected artists’ strong connection to place, whether capturing the power and movement of the coastline or the quieter beauty of inland scenery. Surf & Turf: Coastal and Pastoral Landscapes from the 19th Century to Today highlights the continuity between historic and contemporary painters working within these traditions while showcasing the richness and variety of America’s coastal and rural landscapes.
