New Hampshire Antique Co-op is pleased to present two new exhibits: The Boston School: 19th & 20th c. Paintings and From Land to Sea: Contemporary Works by William R. Davis, two fine art exhibits and sales of paintings representative of the traditions of the Boston School and the Guild of Boston Artists.

The exhibits feature 19th and 20th century paintings from the Boston School, more than 30 contemporary works by William R. Davis, and selection of current works from Guild of Boston Artists members Joseph McGurl and Erik Koeppel.

The Boston School was a group of Boston-based painters active during the early decades of the 20th century. Turning their back on Modernism, these painters valued exacting craftsmanship and direct observation of nature. Often classified as American Impressionists, they cultivated a regional style that combined beautiful workmanship with a unique interpretation of color and a notable respect for the traditions of Western art history. Their typical subject matter was landscapes, still lifes and portraits, all viewed from a conservative perspective.
 
Artists of the Boston School represented in The Boston School: 19th & 20th c. Paintings include Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), William McGregor Paxton (1869-1941), Arthur Clifton Goodwin (1864-1929), Laura Coombs Hills (1859-1952), Childe Hassam (1859-1935), Lilla Cabot Perry (1848-1933), Louis Kronberg (1872-1965), John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916) and Hermann Dudley Murphy (1867-1945). Also featured in this exhibit is William McGregor Paxton’s easel from Fenway Studios.
 
From Land to Sea features works by William R. Davis, a Massachusetts painter carrying on the traditions of the Boston School. Davis is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, a non-profit association of painters and sculptors founded in 1914, which owns and operates a gallery at 162 Newbury Street in Boston. This show includes Davis’ signature marine paintings and landscapes of the White Mountains.
 
Davis’ paintings typically capture the serene light of sunrise or sunset on the water. He employs many of the techniques traditionally used by American luminosity painters to realize his personal vision, showing a marked preference for 19th century subjects. Davis refers to sunset as “the hour when night usurps day,” observing that this is the “best time of day for painters to capture the inner state of a landscape.”
 
The Boston School: 19th & 20th c. Paintings and From Land to Sea: Contemporary Works by William R. Davis will be on view in the galleries at New Hampshire Antique Co-op through April 30, 2016.
